Is Black Friday Turning Into Black Thursday?

By on November 25, 2017

Do you remember the days when Black Friday actually took place on Friday? It seems like so long ago now. Last year marked the beginning of a strange new tradition. Retailers all over the country kick started Black Friday shopping on Thursday night. Yes, the frenzy began on the evening of Thanksgiving. Employees and shoppers alike skipped out on the holiday tradition to fill stores. For shoppers, the lure was scoring unbeatable deals on discounted designer fashion, electronics, and more. For employees, the idea of time and a half was impossible to pass up.

It looks like Black Friday is quickly turning into Black Thursday. Once again, stores are beginning their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving. According to an article from the Newark Advocate, even department stores like Macy’s are opening up at 6pm this November 27th. That is a massive two hours earlier than they opened last year. This begs the question: will stores stop closing their doors on Thanksgiving?

From a business standpoint, I get it. Retailers want to get a leg up on their competition. Opening on Thursday makes it easier to rake in pre-holiday cash. From a consumer standpoint? This shift makes me sad. Don’t get me wrong. I am a bargain shopper through and through. There is nothing quite so exciting as finding a sweater you love for half the price. Or adding a designer piece into your wardrobe for 20% off. But on Thanksgiving? No thanks.

The last thing I want to do on a holiday is spend it shopping. (And I love shopping.) Holidays are about spending time with family. Especially the Thanksgiving holiday! It is a day to be thankful for what you have…. not what you could have. I feel very strongly that all Black Friday shopping should wait until Friday. Thursday should be completely reserved for family, friends, and good food. Do you feel the same? Or are you gearing up to get your shop on?

With Black Friday (or Black Thursday as it may be) shopping is just a few days away, planning is key. If you plan to tackle the crowds and score some major sales, here are a couple of survival tips:

Do your research before you go. Look online or in flyers to see what items are going to be on sale.

Compare prices. Take a look at other stores that are selling the pieces you are looking for. This will help you find the best possible price.

Bring a friend with you. There is power in numbers! Black Friday shopping can be pretty…. intense. Bringing a friend along with you can keep you sane.

Stick to your budget. Great deals often lead to overspending. Give yourself a budget and do your best to stick to the budget.

Brace yourself for crowds. It doesn’t matter where you’re going shopping. It will be busy. So, be prepared to handle the rush!

Black Friday is changing…. and it’s not for the better. With the annual sales starting on Thanksgiving, retail staff and shoppers are leaving their families behind.

What do you think about Black Friday turning to Black Thursday? Will you be shopping early?
