How To Say No To Sugar

By on May 2, 2017

I recently listened to another wonderful session with Karly Randolph Pitman. I previously wrote about her session called, “When Sugar Is Your Mother“. But this one was called, “How To Say Not To Sugar“. Karly has been one of the main inspirations in my life that’s helped me on my sugar-free journey. She doesn’t focus on what you should and shouldn’t eat because if you are a sugar addict you already know. Karly focuses on the emotional healing part of this journey. She’s a mother in real life, but she innately seems to have a nurturing soul. Even her voice is soothing to listen to. I wanted to share some of her nuggets of wisdom with you in case you are battling sugar addiction or have decided to join me for this months’ Sugar Free Challenge.

Before you think about totally kicking the sweet habit, here are 5 pointers Karly recommends you integrate into your life. This way you won’t have to adjust from one extreme to the other.

  1. Eat regular meals, including breakfast (within an hour of waking up). This stabilizes your blood sugar and your body will know every few hours you will eat regularly.
  2. Eat protein with your meals, and more whole foods. Learn to incorporate whole foods. If you are still eating a donut for breakfast, start with eating more real food first before you focus on cutting all of the sugar and junk food out.
  3. Drink lots and lots and lots of water. We often crave sugar and experience what we think is hunger when we are actually thirsty. Water should become your primary beverage.
  4. Rest. Don’t just focus on a healthy night’s sleep every night but also have places throughout your day when you feel tired that you allow yourself to rest.
  5. Exercise. This can be as easy as walking, gardening, or tai chi. But have something physical you do in your life to take care of yourself. It’s a great stress outlet.

All of these things tell your body that it has what it needs and that it’s taken care of. That it’s loved by you. It’s like a loving mother inside of you that comes along and says, “Dear One, I’m going to take good care of you.” This is crucial because Karly shares that, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all”.

I’m sure you have heard the quote, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Well, that has been my experience with trying to kick the sugar habit. During this month’s challenge I am participating in Karly’s 30 Day Lift program because, well, it’s different. In the past I have tried to do it through will power or out of fear. Neither of these have worked or removed the obstacles from within.

What you’re really needing to heal a sugar addiction

What does remove these obstacles is surprising, nourishing, pleasurable, enlivening, joyful, and gentle. It’s a more loving, nurturing, compassionate relationship with:

  • yourself
  • the emotions that can drive you to sugar
  • your cravings
  • and your very growth process out of sugar

This change in relationship helps you stop eating sugar in 3 primary ways:

  1. It softens the very emotions, cravings and stress that drive you to sugar in the first place. Rather than fighting against cravings, you can move through them without acting them. And what a relief! As you open to your emotions and you soften stress, life becomes more joyful and nourishing.
  2. As you give yourself the emotional support you’re truly needing, and as you rest in it, you no longer need to use the sugar to reduce stress or to care for your emotions.
  3. With a self loving relationship, you’re able to set healthy boundaries around sugar. The paradox of self love is that it empowers you to say no to things that harm you, like sugar bingeing. Rest assured: you can learn how to say no to sugar in a way that is self loving, respectful, firm, and kind – without the stress, pain and guilt of shame, blame, white knuckling it, overcontrol, beating yourself up, bribing yourself, and trying to walk a tightrope of perfection.
